Once upon a time there were three sisters Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos.
Clotho was a young maiden “I spin the threads of life” she sang as she twirled her spindle. “I shall spin the red thread of anger and the blue thread of calm, the white thread of peace and joy and the black thread of despair”. “I spin the threads of life, I spin the threads of life”.“The well is deep. The well is deep. Magic Eyes. Sisters come and see these Magic Eyes, I spin the threads of life”
Lachesis was said to be a young women of great beauty. To her sisters she said “I shall decide the length of the threads of life. I shall measure up heroes who live short lives and cowards who live long lives. I shall decide when death comes knocking on the doors of Kings, commoners, princes, beggars and basket makers” And she set to work at once.
Atropos was said to be an old withered crone. To her sisters she said “I shall cut the threads of life. I shall snip the lives of all men and women. Old and young. Rich or poor. My scissors will cut every thread when the time is right” And she set to work at once.
A women in white smiles and regards the sisters as they work. She is an ancient queen. The sisters are aware and unaware of her presence. Sometimes they get a glimpse of her in the corner of their eyes, in the shadows, or in the light of a candle. She is far older than they. She is light. She is dark. The sisters spin and weave and the white queen who over sees all watches and waits.
